This is a great tow controller. I started using a P2 back in 2007 on a Big Tex CH70 I towed with my 2003 Powerstroke. Now I'm using this P3 on my 2015 Ram 2500 to control the brakes on a 36' Sprinter Wide Body 5th wheel. Effectively, both controllers work the same way but the interface is updated and improved on the P3. I camp mostly in the mountains and have to travel up and down some pretty steep winding roads. I had trouble with Ram's Integrated Trailer Brake Module (ITBM), mostly that it will only put 8V maximum to the trailer brakes (by poor design) when traveling below 35 miles an hour. That makes coming to a stop on a hill very interesting with a heavy 5th wheel in tow. With only 8V to the trailer brakes, it tends to take way too much time to stop the truck. For some reason, the ITBM was changed in 2014 to this less-than-adequate design.Installation was simple. The hardest part was figuring out where I wanted it mounted. I finally decided to mount it to the panel below the steering wheel about 4" below the ignition. From there all I had to do was attach the mount with 2 screws and unplug the 4 wire cable from the ITBM and into the adapter cable that comes with this set (3024). According to etrailer.com, unplugging the cable from the ITBM will cause a light to illuminate and an error message to display on the instrument panel. This, supposedly, can only be fixed by the dealer flashing the Ram's computer to remove the ITBM option. However, I do not seem to have that issue. I've been towing with this controller for the last few months and still have not seen an error message or light. I have been careful not to touch the ITBM control because I have a feeling that will cause an error message and I will have to unplug the P3 and re-connect the ITBM to get it to go away.Using the P3 Controller:Use of the controller is fairly straight forward. It is an inertia based controller which means it detects how hard the truck is stopping and applies voltage to the trailer brakes proportionally. As with most controllers, you have to set the maximum trailer braking force (0.0 to 13.9). This should be set so that the trailer brakes will brake as hard as possible without locking-up. This controller also has a "Boost" setting which adjusts the "aggressiveness" of the braking based on how hard you are trying to stop the truck. The boost has 4 settings. Off, b1, b2, and b3. The Tekonsha instructions explain how to adjust this based on the weight of trailer you are towing vs the weight of the truck you are towing with.I'm very pleased with the P3 and feel that it has made it significantly safer to tow heavy loads with the latest generation of Ram, especially around town and when stopping on hills. Also, I can now use the trailer brakes to change the position of my slider 5th wheel hitch instead of having to chock the trailer tires. The P3 will output full truck voltage (13.8V) to the trailer at a stop which locks the trailer tires and allows the slider hitch to move. When trying to stop quickly with the Ram ITBM, I can feel the trailer pushing the truck forward and the instability (trying to jack-knife) this causes. With the properly adjusted P3, I can feel the trailer pulling on the truck and keeping the trailer and truck inline, just as it should.
